Annville-Cleona senior Avree Wright on Friday successfully defended her District 3-AA girls’ shot put crown, throwing a 39-4 ¾ to mine gold at Shippensburg University.
Wright, a University of Delaware recruit, hit her winning throw on her third attempt in the preliminary round; she came into the meet as the No. 1 seed with a 39-6 ½ throw earlier this season in the Lebanon County championships.
The 39-6 ½ is Wright’s personal record.
She finished fourth in the district finals in her sophomore season, after finishing seventh here as a freshman.
Wright won last year’s district gold with a throw of 37-1 ¼.
She’ll be back at Shippensburg one last time next weekend, hoping to cap her Little Dutchmen career with more gold.
Wright was the third Annville-Cleona girls’ athlete to earn a gold medal on the first day of the district championships …

Wright on defending her district title — “I was actually really nervous coming into today, not really knowing what I was going to do. I did my normal warm-ups and then I felt really great. The rain this morning kind of freaked me out a little bit. But throwing here for the last four years, I’m very comfortable here; nice and easy. But I was nervous because I knew they’d be coming to beat me. But it helped me throw my best.”
Wright on qualifying for the PIAA finals — “I have a lot left. I’m planning on coming back here and putting up numbers I’ve never put up. I have a lot of work to do, but I’m looking forward to it. I want to break 40 for the first time. I’ve yet to hit the 40 number, so that’s what I’m going for. I’d like to do that before I graduate.”
