Mount St. Joseph still No. 1, but big changes in PennLive's Class AAAA girls' basketball state rankings

Crazy night for PennLive’s Class AAAA state-ranked teams on Tuesday.

No. 2 Cumberland Valley lost to Dover in a District 3-AAAA semifinal game, and No. 3 North Allegheny fell to Hempfield (Greensburg) in a WPIAL-AAAA semifinal game.

So we had to get out the carving knife and make some changes to the top 10 — which features two new teams this week.

Hey, don’t forget: We’re all about rewarding the hot teams, and now that everyone is in district playoffs, the hot teams are advancing through their brackets — and onto our list.

That said, Cumberland Valley and North Allegheny dipped, along with Manheim Township and Central Bucks West, who also suffered losses in the last week.

Wilson-West Lawn, which knocked off Manheim Township and has won 15 games in a row heading into the District 3-AAAA championship on Friday, was shuffled up a few spots.

And say hello to Dover and to West Chester Bayard Rustin.

Dover rode a huge second-half effort to a 45-38 victory over then-No. 2 Cumberland Valley on Tuesday, and Rustin has muscled its way into the District 1-AAAA semifinals and has piled up 22 wins.

Dover, which will take on Wilson-West Lawn for the District 3-AAAA title on Friday, was parked at No. 10 for a couple of weeks earlier this season, and makes a return appearance to the top 10 this week.

Dover’s two losses this season are by a combined seven points, to Class AAAA honorable mention Red Lion by two in OT, and by five to District 3-AAA No. 1 seed Susquehannock.

We’ve had a couple of different District 1-AAAA squads in the 10-slot this season — Garnet Valley, Central Bucks South — so we’ll see how long Rustin can stay there; the Golden Knights get No. 3 North Penn in a district semifinal, with Mount St. Joseph or Spring-Ford, our two top-ranked teams, waiting in the finals.

Here is the Class AAAA top 10 and honorable mention picks, with records through Tuesday’s games and home district in parenthesis ...
