Five teams from the Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League have been selected to participate in the 35th anniversary edition of the Flyers Cup tournament, which begins Sunday.

Cumberland Valley, Hershey, Cedar Crest, Wilson and Manheim Township were all invited to the event, which crowns the top high school teams in the eastern half of the state. The Eagles, Trojans, Falcons, Bulldogs and Blue Streaks were the top-five finishers in the CPIHL's Tier 1 this season.

Run by the Eastern Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey Association – which includes the CPIHL, two Philadelphia-area high school leagues, a Lehigh Valley league and the East Penn League – the Flyers Cup determines which teams represent the east in the state championship against Penguins Cup-winning teams from the west.

This year, the Pennsylvania champs will be determined March 22 during the finals in State College at Penn State University’s new Pegula Ice Arena.

Cumberland Valley, Manheim Township and Wilson are scheduled to compete in the “Class AA” bracket. Hershey and Cedar Crest will compete in the “Class A” bracket.

CV is the No. 7 seed and has drawn a first-round match-up with 10th-seeded Ridley at 8 p.m. on March 5 at Ice Line in West Chester.

Manheim Township is seeded 18th and will face No. 15 Council Rock North at 8:45 p.m. Monday in a play-in round game at The Rink at Warwick in Warminster. Wilson enters the event as the No. 20 seed and opens at 7 p.m. Monday vs. No. 13 Neshaminy, also in Warminster.

In “Class A,” Hershey is seeded 13th and opens play Sunday against 20th-seeded Great Valley with a 6:30 p.m. game at Ice Line in West Chester. The winner advances to face fourth-seeded Springfield (Delco) at 8:45 p.m. Monday at IceWorks in Aston.

Cedar Crest is the No. 17 seed and opens play Sunday at 6:15 p.m. against 16th-seeded Sun Valley at Ice Line in West Chester. The winner moves on to play top-seeded Unionville back at Ice Line at 8:15 p.m. Monday.

Five CPIHL teams played in the 2013 event, too. Cumberland Valley and Dallastown both lost their only “Class AA” games. Wilson won its first game but was eliminated in its second game. In “Class A” action, Hershey went 1-1 and Mechanicsburg lost its only game.
