Mid-Penn Keystone girls' basketball was the last division to put a cap on conference play before the holiday break with four games on Monday night.

COUGARS SNARLING: Considering Palmyra opened last season 29-0, won Keystone, Mid-Penn and District 3-AAA titles and returned an extremely solid nucleus from that club, we aren’t exactly stunned that coach Ron Berman’s pack is 8-0 out of the gate. What does have us impressed is how Palmyra has done it: With scrappy, defense-first point guard Katie Dembrowski (broken wrist) still on the shelf, likely until mid-January. Having Bucknell recruit Carly Richardson to steady and lead the troops certainly helps. And the Cougars are playing smothering D. As always. Anxious to see how far this group can go — again — without sniffing an L.

WILDCATS SNARLING: Compliments of its 47-31 win over Cedar Cliff on Monday, Mechanicsburg settled into solo second place behind Palmyra. Coach Clay McAllister’s outfit has won five of six, sits a game behind the Cougars and is a game clear of Lower Dauphin, Susquehanna Township and Trinity in a crowded Keystone race. FYI: Palmyra at Mechanicsburg isn’t until Jan. 17, so a lot could happen between now and then. Stay tuned. Palmyra snapped Lower Dauphin’s 4-game winning streak and knocked the Falcons back a peg in the Keystone race with a 49-37 win over LD on Monday. Falcons get unbeaten Greencastle-Antrim in the first round of LD’s holiday tourney on Friday. Circle that one.

RAINING JUMPERS: Cedar Cliff’s Olivia Dalby, who paces the Keystone with 14 3-pointers, has drilled at least one trey in all seven games so far this season.
