CHASING THE BUCKSKINS: Raise your hand if you had Conestoga Valley leading the Section 2 race at the season’s first checkpoint. It’s OK; I didn’t either. But here are the Bucks, at 3-1 and 5-2 and sitting atop the heap. FYI: CV went 4-18 last season, so coach Amy MacDonald’s bunch already passed that mark. The addition of Lancaster Mennonite transfer Jada Dunsen has worked out quite nicely; she’s been superb in the open court. Bucks have also been deadly from 3, and have gotten contributions from young-pup brigade members Tricia Erb and Rachel Robinson. Been saying for a few years now that CV would be back. Looks like the time is now.

USUAL SUSPECTS: Reigning section champ Ephrata (2-2, 3-4), reigning section runner-up and preseason pick Cocalico (2-2, 5-2) and upstart Lebanon (2-2, 4-4) are on the Bucks’ heels; Lebanon knocked off CV in their head-to-head section opener on Friday.

HELLO, WORLD: Speaking of young-pup brigade, Ephrata frosh Caroline Stauffer has been superb in her first two weeks sporting a varsity uniform. Double digits in every game out. Fourth in the section in scoring. First in the section in 3s. Remember her name — and thanks to her emergence, don’t count out Ephrata, which lost a ton of talent off last season’s section-championship squad. Stauffer plus holdover jackrabbit G Kelly Liebl have the Mounts back with the lead pack.

ON THE BENCH: Two new coaches in the L-L this season, and both are in Section 2 — Solanco’s Janelle Garber and Elizabethtown’s John Myers, who took over for Garber when she took a teaching job at Solanco. Very early returns: Elizabethtown is 0-4, 2-5 and Solanco is 0-4, 1-6. Golden Mares at Bears on Jan. 6, when Garber and Myers will match wits for the first time.

GROWLING BEAR: Elizabethtown’s Jen Fairbanks started off the season by making a verbal commitment to play college hoops for Messiah College. She’s been playing like a college recruit; Fairbanks is second in the L-L in scoring.
