Advance planning by District 3 chairman Sam Elias and girls’ volleyball chairperson Tory Harvey have made sure that the District 3 girls’ volleyball championships were affected very minimally by Hurricane Sandy.
Harvey, the athletic director at Dallastown High School, announced Sunday evening that the District 3 quarterfinals in Class AAA, AA and A would be moved from Tuesday evening to Wednesday.
Both Harvey and Elias informed The Patriot-News via e-mail Tuesday morning that tonight’s quarterfinal schedule was still a go. District 3 also re-iterated the schedule via Twitter later Tuesday afternoon.
In order to stay on schedule, tonight’s quarterfinal winners will turn around and play in the District 3 semifinals Thursday evening as previously scheduled with the championships still scheduled for Saturday at Dallastown.
Eight midstate volleyball teams, now with an extra day of practice, will take to the court Wednesday night.
In Class AAA, fourth-seed Cumberland Valley will face defending Class AA champ Susquehannock and ninth-seed Gettysburg will take on three-time defending AAA champ Hempfield in a doubleheader at Central York High School.
Four local Class AA schools — Palmyra, West Perry, Trinity and Greencastle-Antrim — are still in the mix. Palmyra will face Eastern York and West Perry takes on top-seed Delone Catholic in a doubleheader at Dallastown.
Greencastle-Antrim, which hasn’t played in close to two weeks, will face Brandywine Heights as part of a twinbill at Lower Dauphin High School. The other tilt will pit third-seed Trinity against state-ranked Berks Catholic.
Elsewhere, Halifax will face Lititz Christian Wednesday in a Class A quarterfinal at Northern, while Schuylkill League champion Tri-Valley will face Shenandoah Valley Thursday in the District 11-A semifinals, which were postponed from Thursday.
Mid-Penn Commonwealth champ State College will host Central Mountain Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a District 6-AAA semifinal.
