Wednesday was a big day in the Berks County field hockey, with first-place contests in Divisions I and II.

When the day was over, Wilson and Twin Valley stood alone on top of their respective divisions.

Wilson (5-4, 4-0) defeated Gov. Mifflin (5-3, 3-1) by a 2-0 score to take sole possession of first in Berks I. Avery Marz and Margaret Lillis assisted each others goals, while Azure Fernsler made six saves for the Bulldogs.

Marz is the leading scorer for Wilson, with nine goals and two assists. Maddie Klee has seven goals and two assists.

In Wednesday's key Berks II contest, Twin Valley (9-0, 4-0) downed Berks Catholic (7-1, 3-1) by 2-0 as well. It was something of a lower scoring game than what might have been expected, as the Raiders and Saints are the top two scoring teams in Berks County. But Kendra Jones and Hannah Menge broke through for goals. Darby Kozan made one save for the win.

Ashley Hoffman has 12 goals and 12 assists for the Raiders, second in the league to only Berks Catholic's Katrina Balatgek, who has 18 goals and six assists.

Though Wilson and Twin Valley have the advantage, the chases for the division titles are hardly over. Gov. Mifflin and Wilson meet again on Oct. 7, the same day Berks Catholic gets its rematch with Twin Valley.

Another first-place matchup to come

Oley Valley (9-0-1, 3-0) and Brandywine Heights (6-2, 3-0) are still tied on top of Berks III. They will have their first of two head-to-head contests next Monday, and the second on Oct. 9.

Erin Gillingham has seven goals and three assists to lead the Lynx in scoring, while Deanna Daddona has eight goals and five assists to pace the Bullets.

York County with its own big school race

Dallastown (7-1, 5-0) is in first place in YAIAA Division I, ahead of Red Lion (6-1, 4-1) and Northeastern (6-1, 3-1). The Wildcats will face Northeastern on Friday and meet Red Lion on Monday and try to solidify their lead. If, however, the Bobcats and Lions win their games, it might turn this division into a four team race with Central York (3-4, 3-2) waiting in the wings.
