Penn Manor's Katina Jones, Elco's Maddie Shaak, Lancaster Catholic's Lil Veronis advance to District 3 girls' tennis semifinals

LANCASTER - Three L-L League girls' tennis players, including a pair of league champs, advanced to the semifinal round of the District 3 individual tournament after earned two victories on Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.

L-L League AAA champ Katina Jones from Penn Manor, L-L League AA champ Maddie Shaak from Elco, and L-L League AA runner-up Lil Veronis from Lancaster Catholic will play in semifinal matches back at Hershey Racquet Club on Monday starting at noon.

Jones topped L-L League foe Catherine Bond from Cedar Crest 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before beating Central York's Emily Kuhn, the No. 2 seed, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Shaak, the No. 3 seed in AA, picked up a pair of dominating wins Saturday: She toppled Kutztown's Monika Volk 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and then cruised past Wyomissing's Greta Koch 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Veronis, meanwhile, defeated Berks Catholic's Lin Robertson 6-3, 6-1 in Round 1 before knocking off the No. 4 seed, Camp Hill's Eleanor Gerhard, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

On Monday at noon in the semifinals ...

Jones vs. No. 3 Sruthi Kamprath from Wilson.
Shaak vs. No. 2 Anna Spoden from York Catholic.
Veronis vs. No. 1 Audrey Ann Blakely from Wyomissing.

Also Saturday, L-L League AAA runner-up Emily Mann from Manheim Township fell to No. 1 Katie Wagner from Susquehannock, 6-0, 6-4, in the quarterfinals after Mann beat Ephrata's Brittany Smith 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

Wagner beat Lampeter-Strasburg's Sarah Sambrick 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.

Kuhn, who fell to Jones in the quarterfinals, topped McCaskey's Ruth Anne Millen 6-4, 6-0 in the first round.

And in AA, Donegal's Steph Gainer dropped a gut-wrenching 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 first-round decision to Berks Catholic's Mariah Wardius; Wardius went on to fall to Blakely 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

The championship matches will be contested Monday 30 minutes after the semifinals.
