Champions crowned.
Central Dauphin (Commonwealth), Cedar Cliff (Keystone), Big Spring (Colonial) and Northern (Capital) locked up Mid-Penn titles Thursday night by an average score of 59-12. Each team was undefeated in their respective divisions.
Bitter-sweet day for Bulldogs.
On Wednesday night, Big Spring felt pretty good about its chances of making the district team championships. The Bulldogs were positioned in 18th and could make a run by beating Boiling Springs, Greencastle-Antrim and Carlisle. But a mistake in the District 3-AAA power rankings Excel spreadsheet involving the Bulldogs OWWP -- opponents strength of schedule -- was detected Thursday afternoon. When it was corrected, the Bulldogs fell to 22nd, out of the playoff picture.
Speaking of CD.
The Rams are 114-1 in their last 115 matches and haven't lost a Mid-Penn dual meet in five seasons. Jeff Sweigard's team also hasn't lost a dual-meet in the new gymnasium. The Rams beat Mifflin County 50-16. In the featured bout, Huskies 113-pounder Hayden Hidlay, ranked No. 10 in the state, earned a narrow 6-4 decision over Austin Camacci.
Streaking Wildcats.
It didn't look good for Mechanicsburg after starting the season 1-2 in the Keystone division and 3-3 overall. But the Wildcats rallied and completed a four-match surge by beating Susquehanna Twp. 52-15 Thursday. Head coach Greg Budman's team entered the night positioned 10th in the latest power rankings and are assured of a postseason birth.
Bouce back Bubblers.
Boiling Springs was pushed around by rival Big Spring Wednesday but rebouded in a big way to blow out Waynesboro 63-7. The Bubbles captured 12-of-14 bouts, 10 of which earned Rod Wright's team bonus points. Korbin Myers (113), Travis Wickard (145), Tyler Kauffman (152) and Connor Murphy (170) earned falls for the Bubblers, who will enter District 3-AA Team Championships as the No. 1 seed.
Big win for Sterner.
Middletown sophomore Levi Sterner is our 106-pound sleeper for this year's District 3-AAA Individual Championships. The Blue Raiders sophomore is 19-4 after beating Palmyra's Evan Bogdan -- a district qualifier a year ago -- 5-2 Thursday. The Blue Raiders downed the Cougars 51-18 to punch their ticket to next week's District 3-AAA Team Championships.
