FIELD HOCKEY NOTEBOOK
CD East on the way up
What consistutes a strong start to your season often depends on how a team did the year before. In 2011, CD East won just one game. It took the Panthers one day to equal that total this year, downing Middletown 2-1 in a non-league season opener.
Taylor Fackler and Alyssa Rowland each scored in the second half for CD East to post the comeback win.
The Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division has been harsher on the Panthers, as they dropped an 8-0 decision to Central Dauphin and a 5-0 game to Sate College since. But they have put themselves in a position to make significant strides this year.
LD, Palmyra take down state champs
Because of their rich field hockey traditions, a good start for Lower Dauphin or Palmyra is something different than what it would be for CD East. A victory over the defending PIAA Class AAA state champions was probably enough for the Falcons and Cougars to feel good coming out of the opening weekend.
Lower Dauphin beat Hempfield 2-1 with Devyn Barry scoring the winning goal with 8:27 left in the game on the opening day of the season. Kelsey Detweiler had the other goal for the Falcons.
The next day, Palmyra needed a goal even later to post a victory over the Black Knights, with Megan Miller scoring the deciding goal with 2:24 left in a 3-2 Cougar win. Mary Albus and Kendall Kreider also scored.
Palmyra travels to Lower Dauphin on Monday.
Drama for Cedar Crest
For Cedar Crest, a 1-1-1 record looks like the definition of an average start. But more than that, it has been high drama for the Falcons to begin the season.
Cedar Crest opened with a 1-0 loss against Elizabethtown, losing on a goal scored with just 11 seconds left in regulation.
Then the Falcons endured two overtimes to earn a 1-1 tie with Lancaster Catholic. An early goal by Amanda Rhine allowed Cedar Crest to get to that point.
On Wednesday, the Falcons worked overtime again in their Lancaster-Lebanon League Section I opener at Manheim Twp., and took 1-0 win with Kelsy Kauffman‘s goal.
The Falcons host Hempfield on Wednesday.
