Lancaster Catholic senior guard Eric Goldbach scored 18 points in the Crusaders' win over Hempfield on Wednesday.

LANDISVILLE - Nice start for Lancaster Catholic's boys' basketball team, which made its season debut Wednesday night with a 54-49 non-league win at Hempfield.

Crusaders' senior guard Eric Goldbach, one of a handful of holdovers from last season's team, which won the Section 4 title before falling to McCaskey in the L-L League championship game, was in the middle of everything against the Black Knights.

A dribble-driver who can score at the rim and step back and shoot the J, Goldbach showed that he will be one of Lancaster Catholic's on-court leaders.

He scored a team-high 18 points, grabbed four rebounds and - most importantly - in crunch time, the ball found its way into his hands quite a bit.

Needing to foul, Hempfield hacked Goldbach several times down the stretch Wednesday, and he delivered at the line, making 7-of-8 attempts, including five in a row with time running out to help ice the win for the Crusaders, who needed a hot start with Friday's trip to Donegal looming.

Chatted with Goldbach after the game about Lancaster Catholic's season-debut win, plus the Crusaders' expectations moving forward.
