Lower Dauphin's softball team made a commute to Hershey from Central Dauphin Thursday night after advancing to the Mid-Penn championship game.

The journey was for naught. The contest with Cumberland Valley was wiped out by rain.

A scheduled 7 p.m. start already was delayed while waiting for the arrival of Lower Dauphin, which took 10 innings to defeat Greencastle-Antrim 3-2 in a Tuesday afternoon semifinal. But heavy rains hit shortly after Lower Dauphin's bus reached the parking lot and officials opted to scrub the game.

The championship game will not be rescheduled. Thus, the Mid-Penn title will remain vacant this season.

"I guess as far as we're concerned," joked Cumberland Valley coach Gregg Williams, "if they don't crown a champion we're still champs from last year, right?"

Cumberland Valley defeated Susquenita 11-3 in the other Tuesday afternoon semifinal, played at Hershey. The Eagles switched dugouts and remained at the field while awaiting an opponent before taking refuge in the team bus shortly before the storm arrived.
