Keith Hunter is just starting to learn the ropes in the sprinting events.
The Milton Hershey junior, a first-year competitor in the sprints, is also winning.
Hunter, who came into this season with only jumping experience, made his presence known at Saturday's 26th Annual Pan-Ram Invitational, held at Landis Field in Harrisburg.
Hunter won the 100 dash in 11.16 to narrowly defeat the field. He finished in front of Steel-High's James Warren (11.17) and York's Gregory Freeland (11.18).
"Being next to someone fast helped me keep my momentum," Hunter said. "I wanted to stay ahead. I had a little kick at the end, a little extra boost of energy."
Hunter credits a fast start and a strong finish for his victory. He was neck-and-neck with several runners near the end, but lowered his head across the finish line just in time to claim victory.
"It feels excellent inning the sprints because last year I was doing jumps," Hunter said. "I want to try to go as far as possible this season, but I'll have to get my time much lower. Practice will help.
"I need to work on finishing much stronger."
Milton Hershey's other winner was Lindell Robinson-Swinson, who claimed the 400 in 50.32, finishing in front of Norristown's Tyrone Leach (50.58) and Reading's Dontae Owens (50.78).
He fell behind early, but roared back for victory with a big kick over the final stretch.
Robinson-Swinson, who was on the shelf for two and a half weeks this season after falling over a hurdle during a dual meet, said he's beginning to round back into form.
"I'm not in shape right now, I only started training last week," Robinson-Swinson said. "I feel good, honestly, I'm just a little out of shape. The 400 runners pushed me so much my butt is burning. I haven't felt that way in a while."
Robinson-Swinson said his goal for the season is to pursue Milton Hershey's school-record of 47.7.
