In the PIAA Class AA girls' diving finals, at the state swimming championships at Bucknell on Saturday, there was more drama at the bottom of the podium than at the top.
Upper Moreland's Sydney Szopo won the gold medal with 427.45 points, giving her a relatively large margin over McKenie Stetler of Mohawk, who had a 418.85.
But the battle for eighth place, the last place to receive a medal, came down to a difference of 1.4 points.
West York's Erica Sarver, who had been in ninth place through eight dives, managed to sneak past Palmyra's Bri Urich for eighth place with a 359.80.
Urich finished with a 359.80.
Sarver moved into medal position by scoring a 32.70 on her first dive of finals, a back dive pike. She increased her lead over Urich with a 34.80 on a forward 2.5 somersault tuck.
On the last dive of the meet, Urich needed a 32.60 on a forward 2.5 somersault tuck to tie for eighth place, but received a 31.20.
