PIAA swimming: Trinity golden in 200 medley relay and other notes for AA boys

Trinity won the 200 medley relay in the PIAA Class AA boys' swimming championships at Bucknell University on Friday night.

The Shamrocks posted a 1:36.99 to take the gold medal, capped off with a strong last lap by freestyler Lucas Haywood.

Haywood swam the last 50 yards in 21.53, catching Mercyhurst Prep's Ryan Campbell from behind. Mercyhurst Prep was second with a 1:37.08.

"I can't even remember most of that race, it was so intense," Haywood said, after also swimming in Trinity's third-place 200 freestyle relay. "I just told myself to keep moving my arms faster and faster.:

Ian DiCarlo, Henry Tanguay and Anthony Capper swam the first three legs of the relay for Trinity.

The Shamrock's 200 freestyle relay team of Andy Snyder, Haywood, Alex Diaz and Tanguay posted a 1:28.09.

DiCarlo was also seventh in the 200 freestyle with a 1:42.92.

Trinity leads the team scoring with 105 points with five events still to go on Saturday.

Leenhouts third in 200 free

Fleetwood's Matthew Leenhouts posted a 1:41.34 to finish third in the 200 freestyle.

Jarod Kehl of West Allegheny touched the wall ahead of Drew Damich of Chartiers Valley for the gold medal. Kehl had a 1:40.00 and Damich had a 1:40.05.

Log jam in 200 IM

Christopher Georgiadis of Mars Area won the 200 IM with a 1:54.22, winning by almost three seconds. After that, though, it was tight between the next six swimmers.

Second place through seventh place were seperated by just .74 seconds. In the midst of that, Millersburg's Cole Davis was third with a 1:57.21, and Matthew Daniel of Manheim Central was sixth with a 1:57.67.

Near record in 100 butterfly

Brent Benedict of Corry Area won the gold medal in the 100 butterfly, and nearly set a new state record. Benedith recorded a winning time of 48.57, just .01 seconds off the PIAA mark.

Dillon Lancenese of Brandywine Heights was fourth with a 51.01, and Ian Lloyd of Millersburg was seventh with a 52.94.

Around the pool

York Suburban was fifth in the 200 medley relay with a 1:39.78. Will Massey, John Spinello, Matt Spinello and Alex Fridman swam.

Dylan Knaub of Boiling Springs was eighth in the 50 freestyle with a 22.20. Phil Emerson of Franklin Area won with a 20.61.
