Cumberland Valley's Jack Brenneman had the top finish among Mid-Penn boys at the PIAA Swimming Championships at Bucknell on Wednesday, placing third in the 100-yard butterfly with a 48.80.
He had qualified in the morning preliminaries with a 49.38.
"I thought every race today was good," Brenneman said. "I don't have any complaints right now."
Brenneman finished behind Upper St. Clair's Ryan Dudzinski, who had a state-record 47.44, and Upper Dublin's Michael Jensen, who had a 48.01. But his focus was not on the leaders.
"I was just racing the clock the whole time."
Hershey's Will Drexler was eighth with a 50.99.
Ryan Owens third in 200 free
The only other District 3 swimming to get a bronze medal in the session was Daniel Boone's Ryan Owens, who placed third with a 1:40.08. He had the best preliminary time in the morning with a 1:40.11.
"I felt better in the morning," Owens said. "I went out a little too hard, and it hurt at the end."
Nevertheless, the 1:40.08 was the best time of the junior's career.
"I wanted to break 1:40," Owens said. "I was a little off, but right there."
Christopher Devlin of Upper Dublin won the gold medal with a 1:39.22.
Justin Mitchell of Warwick was seventh with a 1:41.40, and Northern's Josh Clarke was eighth with a 1:41.56.
LaSalle College sweeps relays
Both of the relays raced on Wednesday were taken by LaSalle College.
The District 12 rep won the 200 medley relay with a state-record 1:30.26. Second place North Allegheny (1:30.86) and third-place Upper St. Clair (1:31.02) both also beat the previous record.
LaSalle College won the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:23.12.
In the 200 medley relay, Dallastown was fourth with a 1:35.55. Noah Brockway, Mason Tate Spencer Hill and Corey Stauffer swam for the Wildcats. Hershey was sixth with a 1:35.85. Ethan Jacobsen, Jack Kushner, Drexler and Zach Ceneviva swam for theTrojans.
Three District 3 schools medaled in the 200 freestyle relay. Dallastown was sixth with a 1:25.20 with Trevor Hine, Stauffer, Hill, and Brockway. Hershey was seventh with a 1:25.28 with Austin Doss, Ceneviva, Chris Paynter and Zach Luttrell. Cumberland Valley was eighth with a 1:25.42 with Nick Francis, Jacob Deckman, Benjamin Johnston and Brenneman.
Around the pool...
North Allegheny's Zachary Buerger took the gold medal for the second straight year in the 200 Individual Medley with a 1:45.64. He edged Hatboro-Horsham's Michael Thomas, who had a 1:46.18. Dallastown's Trevor Hine was fourth with a 1:52.22.
In the 50 freestyle, Zach Kantz of Bangor finished first by touching the wall just ahead of Brandon McCredie of Council Rock North. Kantz posted a 20.54 and McCredie posted a 20.58. Hershey's Austin Doss was seventh with a 21.06.
