After the PIAA Class AAA boys' diving was over, Central Dauphin's Matt Mullen said that there was no on spectacular dive among his 11 attempts.
However, there were no subpar dives either. By stringing 11 quality dives together, Mullen scored a 440.95 and finished in sixth place to earn a medal at the state championships at Bucknell Wednesday afternoon.
"I dove consistently," Mullen said. "Nothing great for me, consistency works for me."
Mullen was sixth after the six preliminary dives, then moved up to fifth after three semifinal dives.
His highest score on a single dive came on the fourth dive of preliminaries, a forward 2.5 somersault on which he was awarded a 48.10.
"I was a little nervous for my reverse 1.5 [somersault], but it turned out pretty decent," Mullen said.
That was his last dive of the semifinals, on which he scored a 43.20.
Mullen, who will be going to East Carolina next year, placed second at the District 3-AAA championships, but had the top score of all District 3 divers on Wednesday.
Wilson's Joe Warker was seventh with a 436.20, then Hershey's Jake Hedrick rounded out the medal winners with a 429.20.
Another Wilson diver, John Warker, was just off the medal stand with a ninth-place 424.75.
Ian Forlini of William Tennent, the PIAA silver medalist last year, won the gold medal with a 596.15. Liam Fitzgerald of West Chester Rustin was second with a 504.35.
