South Fayette's Mike Carr had the more impressive record but Boiling Springs' Kyle Shoop probably had the more impressive wrestling resume.
After all, some of Shoop's toughest sessions on the mat occur in the Bubblers' wrestling room, where he practices and drills against some pretty tough teammates (Korbin Myers, Grant Bond, John Vaughn).
And Shoop has run into unbeaten Hanover star Ian Brown in the finals at the section, district and region tournaments the last three weeks.
So Shoop, a junior, has pretty much seen it all.
And maybe that's why he looked so prepared for his big third period in his Friday 132-pound quarterfinal match with Carr in the PIAA Class AA tournament at Hershey's Giant Center.
Carr, a sophomore with a 40-0 record, led 2-1 after two periods on the strength of a second period takedown.
But Shoop chose the top position to start the third and immediately went to work on Carr's wrists.
A tight-waist, combined with wrist control, produced two tilts (for three points, then two), as Shoop rallied for a 6-4 win during the morning session.
Shoop (37-8) will face Saegertown's Tyler Vath in Friday's semifinal round, which begins at 6:30.
Carr scored a late reversal to cut the score to 6-4 but the damage was done by Shoop when he was on top.
I knew when I had the choice in the third period, I was going to go 'top','' Shoop said after beating Carr.
"I like to use my tilts when I have to. I'm always working on wrists in practice. If you win the hand fights, you usually win on top.
"I always go in there with an attitude and I feel like I have a really good shot at winning,'' Shoop continued.
"I'm pretty motivated to get to the finals and I went in there and did what I usually do.
"On my feet, I wrestled a little sloppy. But my tilts usually make up for what I do on my feet.''
Shoop was one of four Bubblers to win in quarters as Boiling Springs went 4-1.
Joining Shoop in Friday's semifinal round are Korbin Myers (120), Grant Bond (126) and Kyle Taylor (195).
Myers beat Forest Hills' Triston Law 7-2 while Bond edged Kane's Cody Blankenship 5-3.
Taylor was in a tight bout with Panther Valley's Richard Nase at 195 and the difference in his 3-1 victory was Taylor's two-point tilt in the second period.
The fifth Boiling Springs quarterfinalist, 285-pounder Noah Davis, had a rough go of it against returning state champ Sam Breese of Lakeview. Breese scored a 10-second fall.
