Cedar Cliff's Colello brothers (Jake and Josh) advance to the District 3-AAA wrestling semifinals

Looking at the Colello brothers now, despite the difference in age, you would guess that Josh, Cedar Cliff's sophomore 182-pound wrestler, was always the bigger one.

That's not quite accurate, according to his brother Jake Colello, the Colts' senior 152-pounder.

"No, I started out a 65-(pound wrestler) in third grade, and in first grade he was 60 (pounds) in first grade,'' Jake laughed after he edged South Western's Gage Thomas 8-7 in Friday's quarterfinal round at Hersheypark Arena.

"It took us until about fourth grade.''

And his younger brother just kept growing.

Both brothers are in Saturday morning's semifinal round.

Jake said Josh actually bulked up to 205 pounds during his freshman year at Cedar Cliff before settling in at the 182-pound class this season.

He looks pretty tough at the lighter weight, too.

Josh scored an easy 16-4 major decision over Twin Valley's Preston Hopkins in Friday's quarters. He opened the tourney with a 15-2 victory over Mechanicsburg's Mitch Gotchenaur.

"I felt good,'' said Josh, who draws Manheim Twp.'s John Shorter in the semifinal round.

"I think it's good to have some three-period matches your first day of the tournament because it helps you develop your second wind. So when you have your tougher matches later in the tournament, I won't 'gas' out.''

It was the older Colello who looked to be running on fumes late in his quarters win over Thomas.

He scored the eventual winning takedown with about 52 seconds left in the bout and had to fend off a solid takedown shot from Thomas in the final seconds.

Josh Colello said he wasn't too nervous watching his brother. Sort of.

"I don't know. For some reason, in the back of my head, I just knew he was going to win,'' Josh Colello said.

"(But) I was still pretty nervous.''

"He (Thomas) essentially just thought he could just outwork me and he almost had me,'' Jake Colello said.

"He had a nice, deep single.''

Jake meets Spring Grove's Mason Bentzel in the Saturday semis. And chances are between now and Saturday morning, the Colellos will discuss some wrestling strategy.

"I used to coach him a lot when he was younger because he's not a real technical kid,'' Jake said of his younger brother.

"I'm the technical one. Now, obviously, he knows what he's doing. He had his game plan (for Friday).''

"The whole way up, (Jake's) been helping me,'' Josh said.

"He's real technical. He helps me with that.

"And one of the reasons I wrestle so good now is that (Jake) was always a lighter weight and I was always heavier for my age. So I got the technique (from wrestling his brother) and I'm at a higher weight.

"I owe it all to him.''
