Kids have scored their 1,000th career point in more glamorous ways, for sure.
But for Cocalico senior Marissa Gingrich, she was tickled just to hit the milestone.
Playing in a 4 p.m. tip on Friday against Solanco in the regular-season finale for both teams, Gingrich needed 11 points in front of the home crowd in Denver to hit the milestone.
She joined the club with 20 seconds to go in the first half on — of all things — a free throw.
Gingrich was fouled on the baseline under the hoop and the Eagles were in the 1-and-1.
She toed the line and hit her first attempt, hitting the milestone on the dot, and Cocalico went on to win the game 72-48.
Gingrich finished with 19 points, giving her 1,008 points heading into Cocalico’s L-L League quarterfinal playoff game at Section 4 champ Lancaster Catholic on Tuesday.
INTERVIEW WITH GINGRICH ABOUT REACHING THE MILESTONE:
Not only did Gingrich join the 1,000-point club, but she also joined a pretty rare sorority:
Her mom, then Sue Kreider, a 1987 Annville-Cleona grad, finished with 1,207 points for the Little Dutchmen.
Marissa and Sue became just the second daughter-mother combo in L-L girls’ basketball history to score 1,000 points.
The first:
Lebanon Catholic grad Ann-Marie Fick scored 1,147 point before graduating in 1985. Both of her daughters joined the club for the Beavers: 2008 grad Samantha Carangelo (1,002) and 2010 grad Hailey Carangelo (1,563).
