Boiling Springs’ Team Wrestling Championship tournament is two victories in, but for the Bubblers the real action gets started Friday night.

The Bubblers, a solid candidate to reach the final for the second time in school history, has to tangle with District 10-AA power Reynolds in the semifinal bout scheduled for 8 p.m. at Giant Center.

Before this much anticipated semifinal rematch with the Raiders, District 3 champion Boiling Springs rolled through District 5 champion Chestnut Ridge.

Starting at 120 pounds, the Bubblers’ meat grinder over the next five weights again came up with plenty of bonus points that allowed Boiling Springs to record a 39-27 Class AA quarterfinal victory Friday afternoon.

“Chestnut Ridge gave us a tough match,” Bubblers’ head coach Rod Wright said. “I thought we were okay. Some guys I would liked to have seen wrestle a little better. We got the victory.”

Starting with 120 pounds the Bubbblers (14-1) rattled off five consecutive bonus-point victories that accounted for 26 of the 39 points.

Korbin Myers won by pin at 120, A.J. Kostyak registered a major decision at 126, Grant Bond and Kyle Shoop each claimed first-period pins at 132 and 138, respectively. And John Vaughn finished off the run with another major decision at 145.

So with six hours to kill before Friday night’s 8 p.m. semifinal with Reynolds, Wright and his team grabbed a bite to eat and planned to rest.

If this year’s semifinal between the Bubblers and Raiders is even close to last year’s contest the Giant Center will be rocking with excitement.

“That was the longest match I can ever remember in my career,” Wright said. So many matches went into overtime or were decided late in the third period.

“I expect more of the same. I like our matchups. Maybe it’s our turn to get them.”
