All kinds of crazy things going on Saturday with our state-ranked girls’ basketball teams.
The District 3 folks — particularly Berks County fans — have been waiting for Wilson, the reigning district champ with three Division I recruits on board, to kick it up a notch.
The Bulldogs certainly did on Saturday.
Coach Doug Myer’s bunch knocked off reigning Class AAAA state champ Spring-Ford — on the Rams’ home floor — by a 43-26 count in Spring-Ford’s AFBE Showcase event.
Wilson was No. 1 in our preseason Class AAAA state rankings
Spring-Ford slipped to 13-3; its losses are to No. 1 Mount St. Joseph, Archbishop Molloy (N.Y.) and now Wilson.
FYI: Spring-Ford hosts Mid-Penn Commonwealth leader Cumberland Valley in a state-championship rematch on Feb. 4 in Royersford. Put that in your memory banks.
Wilson improved to 9-7 overall, got everyone’s attention, and very likely earned a spot back into at least our honorable mention list in our next rankings. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, a pair of Class AA ranked teams lost on Saturday, one of them locally.
* No. 4 St. Basil Academy dropped a 32-28 decision to Gwynedd-Mercy and slipped to 13-2 overall.
* And District 3 kingpin York Catholic, No. 7 in Class AA, lost to York/Adams neighbor Dallastown 48-41 and fell to 11-2. Dallastown is an honorable mention pick in Class AAAA.
Two of our top-ranked teams played on Saturday, and they both won:
* Seton-LaSalle, tops in Class AA, cruised past Wilkinsburg 49-17 and improved to 12-3.
* Vincentian Academy, tops in Class A, held off Chartiers Valley 45-34 and improved to 11-2.
Several of our ranked teams are in action on Sunday, and a couple of them are playing against each other:
* Class AAAA No. 1 Mount St. Joseph is playing Class AAA No. 4 Bonner-Prendergast at Lower Merion’s Hoops for Hope.
* Class AAAA No. 8 North Penn is playing Episcopal Academy, also at Lower Merion.
* Class AAAA No. 4 Central Bucks West is playing Class AAAA No. 7 Upper Dublin.
And this must-see attention-getter:
The top two teams in Class AAA — No. 1 Bethlehem Catholic and No. 2 Archbishop Wood — will square off at Lower Merion. Hang a couple of stars next to that one.
All of this, of course, means our rankings could look a smidge different come Wednesday.
Here’s how our PennLive state-ranked girls’ basketball teams fared on Saturday, Jan. 18 (rankings through Jan. 14 with home district in parenthesis; HM = honorable mention) …
