Averee Robinson
Accomplishments: Robinson ended his high school career as the most decorated wrestler in Susquehanna Twp. history. He finished with an overall record of 154-13 and was a four-time state qualifier. The Indians standout captured back-to-back District 3-AAA heavyweight titles in 2010 and 2011 and placed sixth as a sophomore before bagging back-to-back PIAA titles in 2011 and 2012. He is the only two-time state champion in school history.
Did you know: As a freshman, Robinson placed second at districts to Red Lion's Keith Dahlheimer and was ready for a state run. Two weeks later, Robinson had to withdraw from the PIAA Championships because of academic eligibility. It was a turning point in Robinson's academic career, as he bounced back off the mat to attend college at Temple University. Robinson played in six games for the Owls football team last season, posting 12 total tackles.
Why here: The prototypical heavyweight wrestler leans, pushes and uses his weight as a weapon with little or no scoring. Robinson was the exception. He wrestled like a 140-pounder, using ankle picks, taking shots and taking advantage of his freakish athletic ability to score points. Robinson used that to rack up two district titles and become a two-time state champion. His losses as a sophomore at states were two three wrestlers that accounted for five state medals. A combination of speed, agility and competing at a high level on wrestling's biggest stage, Robinson is like few big-men in the sport and is worthy of this standing.
What they said: “Averee was a rare type of heavyweight. He had true wrestling ability and wasn't the typical heavyweight leaner. He was always looking for ways to score and used actual wrestling moves to score. He was always working and was good on the mat. In fact, he won a couple matches at a high level riding guys out and even tilted guys. As heavyweights go, he was a pleasure to watch.” — Rod Frisco, former lead wrestling writer for The Patriot-News.
