There are high expectations for the Big Spring wrestling team heading into the 2013-2014 season.
Some are even talking about the Bulldogs challenging for a district team title. If first impressions are any indication, Nate Gutshall's team will be in the mix.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start, roaring back from an early-match deficit to unseat District 3-AA power Bermudian Springs 36-30 Saturday night.
What made this victory so eye-catching to Bulldog fans is that it was the names you don't know stepping up and getting clutch victories.
Like Kenny Blessing, who stopped Dalton Becker 9-2 at 120 to cut the Bulldogs deficit to 21-16. Then there was Briton Shields planting Austin Jackson at 138 to knot the match at 27.
From there, it was all Bulldogs. Brad lay decked Ted Marines 2-0 at 145, and Chad Wickard pinned Blaize Ott in 56 seconds at 152. The Eagles got their lone win in the last three matches when 160-pounder Jared Spahr beat Chance Rayhart 4-2.
In another key bout, Tristan Sponseller earned a 4-1 decision over Tommy Rayhart at 195. The two will likely meet in next week's Carlisle Tournament.
