For the third consecutive year head coach Al Moyer and his Scouts will face Bishop McDevitt in the District 3-AAA playoffs. The previous two years it was a quarterfinal victory for the Crusaders. This time around a berth in the title game is on the line. Here are five nuggets on Conrad Weiser.
1. Bend, but don’t break: Coming off back-to-back shutout victories over Spring Grove and Dover, the Scouts were actually outgained 272-259 last week in that 23-0 win over Dover. A pair of fumble recoveries and two defensive stands inside the 5-yard-line preserved the shutout. Dover rushed for 246 of its 272 total yards.
2. True dual threat at quarterback: Senior Aidan Brosious is a true dual threat as the Scouts’ signal caller. Brosious has rushed for 899 yards and thrown for 859 with 20 total touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns have come on kick returns.
3. Defense feeds the beast: Six of the Scouts’ 12 opponents this season scored seven or fewer points. Conrad Weiser allows only 11.8 points a game. Linebacker Crew Stover and DE Aaron Sadowski are the main ball hawks with a combined 160 tackles. Stover, a 6-0, 180-pound senior, leads the team with 86 tackles. Keep in mind, Bishop McDevitt has scored 112 points in the last eight quarters of playoff football against the Scouts.
4. RB Alex Guilbe back in the fold: After missing two weeks with a toe injury, Conrad Weiser’s leading rusher returned against Dover to rush for 55 yards on 11 carries to sneak past 1,000 yards for the season.
5. No stranger to a tight squeeze: The three losses on the Scouts’ docket came by a combined total of 16 points. A 1-point loss to Exeter, a seven-point upset loss to Reading and an eight-point defeat to Governor Mifflin. All three of those schools are Class AAAA.
