Each Monday during the football season, members of the PennLive prep football coverage team will pass out three game balls to deserving gridiron athletes. So without further ado....
1. Susquehanna Twp. defense: The Indians’ season is done, but Joe Headen’s troops exited from the playoffs with a dynamic effort. You can’t say enough about how well this defense played against an offense that came in averaging 51.7 points a game. The Indians limited undefeated Manheim Central to a season-low 17 points and 281 total yards. Most impressive was the 89 rushing yards on 36 attempts. That’s getting after it. Yes it was a 17-14 loss for Susquehanna Twp. But how you lose matters, too. And on my fronts this was an impressive performance.
2. Andre Robinson and Rashad Lawson, RB, Bishop McDevitt: The tandem that gets you coming and going did a number on Muhlenberg in the District 3-AAA quarterfinal round. Combined the Crusaders’ running backs went for 250 yards and four touchdowns on only 30 combined carries. That’s a tidy 8.3 yards per carry. Robinson carried 17 times for 151 yards and a score. Lawson rang up 99 yards on 13 totes with three trips to the end zone.
3. Cumberland Valley defense: The only reason the Eagles are still alive is because of the multiple goal-line stands CV’s defense came up with in the second half against Hempfield. The Black Knights started their second-half drives on their own 38, CV 41, CV 4, CV 31 and Hempfield 40. From all of that field position, all Hempfield managed was three points. The Eagles’ came up with two turnovers, and didn’t allow a touchdown despite the Black Knights snapping the ball seven times inside the Eagles’ 11-yard-line. CV won in overtime 17-10, but this one could have easily been over at the end of regulation if it wasn’t for the Eagles’ defense.
