QUARRYVILLE — If Michael Warfel — all 6-1, 205 pounds of him — walked past you, you probably wouldn’t peg him as a two-way interior lineman football player.
A wideout, perhaps. Maybe a defensive end.
But probably not an offensive guard/nose guard type.
Stick some shoulder pads and a helmet on Warfel and — voila — he’s one mean dude in the trenches.
Warfel came up big on both sides of the ball Saturday, helping Lampeter-Strasburg hold off hard-charging Solanco 37-21 in the Section 2 opener for both teams.
It also meant the traveling Milk Jug, presented annually to the winner of these neighboring school districts, was headed back to Lampeter for the fourth year in a row.
From his guard spot, Warfel helped protect QB Collin Shank, who passed for 236 yards a two TD plus a TD keeper.
On defense, Warfel was all over the place from his nose guard spot, stunting and spinning and getting into the backfield to do damage.
For the record, Solanco’s Toby Kreider ripped off 75 and 87-yard TD runs and piled up 200 rushing yards for the Golden Mules.
But take away those long runs, and Warfel and his mates held Solanco to just 84 rushing yards. Plus, L-S produced a defensive TD when LB Jordan Spahr picked off a pass and took it 15 yards to the house, capping the Pioneers’ game-opening 30-0 scoring spree.
L-S coach John Manion speaks quite highly Warfel, calling him one of the hardest working kids he’s ever been around.
All 6-1, 205 pounds of him.
Caught up with Warfel on Saturday after L-S’s win at Solanco and chatted all things L-S football.
