Harrisburg uniforms, parking at Bishop McDevitt and 42 points for Big Spring: Hot-Not list

Every week the PennLive.com High School Football team will each offer you a trio of tasty tidbits we affectionately call What’s Hot-What’s Not.

HOT LIST

* We raise a glass – filled with ice-cold root beer, of course – to Harrisburg head coach Calvin Everett. Those new uniforms the Cougars unveiled Saturday are sweet. The cool part is the away kit is an all-white uniform. Normally all white is hard to make look sharp. But these are off-the-hook sharp. The flat-black helmet certainly helps. The Cougars’ nickname stitched across the front in script and gray numbers sealed it for me. Can’t wait to see the home version Saturday.

* The loudest statement made by a Mid-Penn Conference team in Week 1 came rolling across the valley from deep in the heart of Franklin County. Chambersburg cuffing around Greencastle-Antrim says a lot about the direction these Trojans are trending. It was 49-0 at halftime! Coach Mark Saunders’ offense rang up 184 yards on its six first-half touchdowns. And the defense kicked in one with a pick-six. I know the full metal jacket tests of the Commonwealth Division are coming. But it’s been at least a decade since Chambersburg has been viewed as a player in the big-school division.

*Was that really Big Spring rolling up 42 points … in the first half? That’s the most points the Bulldogs have posted in any game since 2010. Rookie head coach Mike Berry has coaching bloodlines, so I guess it shouldn’t be a huge surprise. But 42 points right out of the gate in Week 1? It won’t always looks like this. But that’s one jaw dropping opening act for sure. Of course it helps when your QB, sophomore Garrett Chestnut, goes 15-for-15.

NOT HOT LIST

* Scoring 50 points isn’t such a rare occurrence these days with the no-huddle and spread offenses of today. But cracking 50 and losing is a tough not-hot pill to swallow. Elco rang up 54 points against Hamburg and lost by a point. And the Blue Raiders led by three scores at halftime. Elco used a pair of big pass plays, covering 52 and 70 yards, and a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns to grab a 41-19 lead at intermission.

* I don’t know all the details of the internal struggles between Bishop McDevitt and the local municipality in terms of parking at its new school. But after what I witnessed Saturday there’s some problem solving that needs to take place, somehow. People are walking on a busy road after parking in places they probably should not. And this was during the day. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like Friday night when Central Dauphin pays a visit to The Roc. Anybody who thought this would be a smooth transition has unrealistic expectations. But this could a potentially dangerous situation with so many people walking on a busy road at night. My best advice is to arrive early.

*Clearly my PennLive partner, Eric Epler, and I are not good at picking straws out of a hat. We still have no idea who the top dogs are in District 3-AAAA. Our best guess preseason was Governor Mifflin. Strike one. After what Wilson did to the Mustangs, the Bulldogs will be the new No. 1 in our rankings. If Wilson falls to Harrisburg Saturday at Severance Field, we quit. But watching the big-school sort itself out is going to be fun to follow.
