No. 1 Former Penn State great Jared Odrick of the Miami Dolphins and Hershey High coach Tony Giovino joined forces June 15 to host the first Jared Odrick Golf Classic at Royal Oaks Golf Course in Lebanon. Proceeds went to Operation Give-back, which benefits families of military personnel, law enforcement and first responders. Odrick, a 2006 grad of Lebanon High, played football at Lebanon for coach Bill Giovino and his dad, Tony.
No. 2 Twenty-nine teams participated in the Odrick event, which included a ball drop and secret auction. Also in attendance were Penn State defensive line coach Larry Johnson, Sr., agent Drew Rosenhaus and former Penn State standouts Devon Still, A.Q. Shipley and Mickey Shuler. Giovino said proceeds are still coming in, with approximately $30,000 having been raised. “I wanted to come back and put my hand in the community in which I grew up,” Odrick said. “It’s a good cause. Hopefully, we can build on what we have and make it an annual event.”
No. 3 East Shore athletes accounted well for themselves in the Big 33 Football Classic on June 15 in Hersheypark Stadium. Clairton’s Tyler Boyd, who is headed to the University of Pittsburgh to play wide receiver, scored four touchdowns and threw for a fifth to lead PA to a 58-27 victory over Maryland. Boyd opened the game with a 91-yard kickoff return.
No. 4 One of PA’s touchdowns was a 68-yard halfback option pass from Boyd to Bishop McDevitt’s Brian Lemelle (Connecticut). Boyd’s pass traveled 55 yards in the air. Lemelle ran past his defender and caught the long spiral in midstride. After Maryland, behind quarterback Shane Cockerille (Maryland) battled back from a 28-0 deficit to within 30-20, Lemelle’s TD made it 37-20 as the first half expired.
No. 5 PA’s offensive line, which featured Hershey’s Andrew Nelson (Penn State) at left tackle and Lower Dauhpin’s Jimmy Marks (St. Francis) at right guard, dominated the line of scrimmage. On defense, Maryland’s outside rushing game was thwarted by Harrisburg linebacker Chris Britton (Connecticut) and Central Dauphin linebacker Zayd Issah (Penn State), while Harrisburg defensive tackle Brian Carter (Temple) helped plug the middle. Carter’s Big 33 teammates referred to him affectionately as “Bernie Mac.”
No. 6 Among the Big 33 alumni in attendance was Lower Dauphin grad Adam Metz (Temple). A redshirt junior offensive tackle for the Owls, Metz is hoping to play this year. “I haven’t gotten to play yet,” he said. “I tore my ACL my sophomore year and when new coaches came in, it was harder to gain their trust.” Metz traveled to away games the second half of last season.
No. 7 East Coast field hockey club teammates Elle Hempt (Cumberland Valley) and Hunter Bracale (Lower Dauphin) celebrated recently at a graduation party held at the Bracale residence. Hempt will be playing field hockey this fall at Temple, where she’ll be joining Central Dauphin standouts Amber Youtz and Katie Foran. Bracale, a two-time PIAA-AAA champ, is being billed as the top recruit entering Duke University this fall.
No. 8 Another local standout, Taylor Trusky of Palmyra, will be playing soccer this fall for Temple. The first Palmyra female soccer player to receive a NCAA Div I scholarship, Trusky spent her freshman season at Pitt, before transferring to Temple. She’s also a two-time national club champ with the Pa. Strikers of Philadelphia.
No. 9 Little League baseball is moving into the post-season with a classic playoff game being played June 18 at Brightbill Park. West Hanover Red and pitcher Scotty McManamon held a 4-1 lead over pitcher Keegan Mahan and PHR Black in the Lower Paxton/West Hanover playoffs, before PHR rallied to send the game into extra innings. After West Hanover took a 5-4 lead in the 10th, PHR’s Shane Stoffel hit a two-run single to win the game, 6-5. Among those in the crowd was Big 33 star Brian Lemelle.

CORRECTION: Last week we identified Kiley Strohm, the new field hockey coach at Milton Hershey School, as the younger sister of Lower Dauphin baseball coach Ken Kulina. Strohm is actually the daughter of Jimmy and Vicki Kulina, which makes Ken her uncle. We're sorry for the mistake.
