PIAA Class AAA Wrestling: Chambersburg's Garett Hammond taking care of business at 152

This is Garett Hammond's time.

Wresters turn it up a notch when they get to states, and Hammond is a good example.

Through two rounds, the Chambersburg senior and Penn State recruit has spent 7:25 on the mat in two impressive tech falls to reach the PIAA Wrestling Championship semifinal round.

The latest victim in a tough-as-nails 152-pound bracket was Pine Richland's Brendan Burnham in a 16-0 pasting that lasted 2:48.

"I'm mainly focused on wrestling, not who they are," Hammond said. "You train for this all year. I'm just going out and wrestling my match."

The match everyone is waiting to see is Round 7 of Cumberland Valley's Tristan Warner vs. Chambersburg's Garett Hammond. One of those tilts occurred in last year's 145-pound state final, which was won by Hammond.

Both parties are doing their part. Warner got an 8-2 decision over Cathedral Prep's Dan Krysiak in the quarterfinals.

Hammond has won four of the six contests, but Warner has won the last two, including sectional and district finals victories.

"I felt I was too patient," Hammond said of the last two meetings. "I need to push the pace.

"I have to score, score and keep scoring. I kind of sat back, and that played into his style."

On Thursday, Hammond was drilling in the weigh-in area with Kennard-Dale's Chance Marsteller.

It isn't the first time the two have worked out together.

"Any chance I can, I work out with him," Hammond said. "You learn a lot of things. He can pick apart your mistakes.

"Beating up on kids doesn't help. You want to work out with someone like Chance. He is very smart and knows a lot when it comes to wrestling."

Some of that knowledge could show up in Hammond's upcoming matches at Giant Center.

"This is what we train for," said Hammond, who will go to Penn State in the summer to take classes and work out with the club team.

"I'm wrestling real well right now. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
