WEST LAWN, Pa. -- Interesting semifinal round here at the PIAA Class AA Southeast Region tournament at Wilson High School.
If you weren't here Saturday morning, well, you missed out on some excellent wrestling.
And the highlight of the round was the performance turned in by Boiling Springs' sophomore Kyle Shoop at 126.
Shoop rallied to stun Bethlehem Catholic star Zeke Moisey, a returning state runner-up, with a 15-9 win that brought the packed house to its feet.
Moisey (21-2), very good on his feet, took a 9-7 lead in the late stages but after cutting Shoop loose for an escape, found himself in deep trouble against the Bubbler.
Shoop scored a takedown to lead 10-9 and then he put Moisey on his back twice to pull away for a six-point victory.
Awaiting Shoop in tonight's final round is Trinity's returning state champ Ryan Diehl, who scored a 68-second second pin against Pen Argyl's Andrew Sutton in the other 126 semifinal.
Diehl (36-3) looms as a prohibitive favorite after his convincing win over Shoop in last weekend's District 3 final.
Championship finals are expected to start at 5 p.m. today and the top five wresters at each weight advance to the PIAA tournament at Hershey's Giant Center, which begins Thursday.
Your semifinal round results:
106: Jaryd Flank, Wilson, decisioned Jacob Wasser, Palisades, 4-1; Luke Karam, Bethlehem Catholic, pinned Coy Campbell, Upper Dauphin, 1:36. This is a rematch of last weekend's District 11 final, won by Karam, a freshman who is the son of Bethlehem Catholic head coach Jeff Karam.
113: Korbin Myers, Boiling Springs, decisioned Stephen Maloney, Bethlehem Catholic, 6-4; David Pipa, Bishop McDevitt, decisioned Alec Torres, Wyomissing, 4-3 OT. Myers is a returning state runner-up and the favorite to win this weight. Pipa is a surprise finalist, having won his quarterfinal and semifinal bouts in overtime.
120: Matt Williams, Pen Argyl, decisioned Josh Giorgio, Schuylkill Valley, 5-3; Darian Cruz, Bethlehem Catholic, major decision over Grant Bond, Boiling Springs, 22-8. Williams rallied to beat Giorgio on a late reversal but he's facing long odds going against Cruz, a returning state champ who beat him in last weekend's District 11 final.
126: Ryan Diehl, Trinity, pinned Andrew Sutton, Pen Argyl, 1:08; Kyle Shoop, Boiling Springs, decisioned Zeke Moisey, Bethlehem Catholic, 15-9.
132: Ian Brown, Hanover, won by tech. fall over Michael Comunale, Pius X, in 5:01 (16-0); Jeffrey Inman, Annville-Cleona, decisioned Lee Todora, Bethlehem Catholic, 4-2 OT. Brown, the District 3 champ, has outscored his two region opponents by a combined 29-4. Inman, a sophomore, is now 40-3 this season.
138: Hunter Harner, Tri-Valley, pinned Alex Gallaher, Camp Hill, 1:53; Ryan Todora, Bethlehem Catholic, decisioned Austin Jackson, Bermudian Springs, 3-1. Gallaher, who beat District 3 champ Tyler Shafer in his Friday quarterfinal, couldn't make it out of the first period against Harner.
145: Blake Bowman, Tri-Valley, major decision over Briton Shelton, Bermudian Springs, 10-0; Michael Racciato, Pen Argyl, won by tech. fall over Vinny Vonelli, Pius X, in 4:21 (21-5). Racciato, now 39-0 and headed to Pittsburgh, is going for his third straight state title.
152: Robbie Moretz, Halifax, decisoned Sam Tascone, Delco Christian, 9-2; Ty Herzog, Northern Lehigh, decisioned Mark Maloney, Bethlehem Catholic, 5-2. Moretz remained unbeaten (39-0) with a solid win against the District 1 champ.
160: Ty Schoffstall, Tri-Valley, won by tech. fall over Auston Hummel, North Schuylkill, in 3:14 (18-3); Nick Mort, Fairfield, pinned Connor Frey, Lehighton, 3:38. Not a lot of local flavor in the semis round but it is worth noting that Camp Hill's Quinn Frassetta, a quarters loser Friday, is still alive in consolations after a 13-7 win over Lower Moreland's Hank Campbell Saturday morning.
170:Pete Renda, Brandywine Heights, pinned Nick Cortopassi, Bethlehem Catholic, in 3:31; Michael Ortiz, Northwestern, decisioned Tristan Sponseller, Bermudian Springs, 6-5. The news here is the last-second loss by Sponseller via an Ortiz takedown.
182: Stephen Loiseau, Lancaster Catholic, decisioned Lyle Troutman, Tri-Valley, 13-7; Adam Mackie, Brandywine Heights, pinned Jose Ortiz, Bethlehem Catholic, in 2:45. No surprise here as the expected District 3 rematch will occur in finals.
195: Adam Geiger, Trinity, won by tech. fall over Austin Bashore, Hamburg, in 4:28 (23-8); Josh Alpha, Bethlehem Catholic, decisioned Justin Blobe, Saucon Valley, 3-2. Geiger has been a force on his feet in two matches, winning them by a combined 45-15 and he will face the defensive-minded Alpha in a contrast of styles.
220: Joey Kaufman, Halifax, decisioned Dennis Atiyeh, Notre Dame-Green Pond, 11-6; Ray O'Donnell, Saucon Valley, won by tech. fall over Calvin Barrick, Boiling Springs, in 3:44 (16-0). Kaufman was too good on his feet against Atiyeh but he will have to step his game up against O'Donnell, a returning two-time state place winner.
285: Trevor Stover, Biglerville, pinned Trevor Crupi, Schuylkill Valley, 3:29; Brent Sterner, Susquenita, decisioned Ben Wertz, Wyomissing, 8-2. Stover continues his impressive role but it's been a very good tournament for Sterner, a District third last week. Sterner pinned District 11 champ Andrew Dunn of Bethlehem Catholic in quarters and gained revenge against Wyomissing's Wertz, who beat him last week.
